Amendment XVI- This amendment allows the Congress to levy an income tax without apportioning it among the states or basing it on the United States Census. Congress passed this on July 2, 1909, and it was ratified February 3, 1913. This amendment made it possible for Congress’s right to impose a Federal income tax. This amendment is very helpful seeing income tax is very important. Income tax allows for federal government to keep an army, build roads and bridges, enforce laws and carry out other important duties. These are all very important things we need and do. People realized in 1913 that in order to collect taxes and not have to share taxes with other states, tax income was needed.
Amendment XVII- Amendment 17 established the popular election of United States Senators by the people of the states. For a while the people did not vote for senators for the first 125 years of the Federal Government so it was made that U.S. Senators would be elected by state legislatures. This amendment was passed by Congress May 13, 1912 but was ratified April 8, 1913. People needed senators so the House of Representatives passed several resolutions proposing a Constitutional amendment for the direct election of senators. Senators are now elected by the state legislatives. We weren’t voting or giving the senators a chance and they were needed so the Congress came up with a way to keep senators in our system. Now we have them and people are big on who are senators are. It may have been uninteresting several years ago but it is to some people important.
Amendment XVIII- This effectively establishes the prohibition of alcoholic beverages in the Unites States by proclaiming the production, transport, and sale of alcohol (though not the consumption or private possession) illegal. Alcohol overall was banned unless it was being used for religious rites. This amendment was ratified January 16th, 1919. The Volstead Act was created which is based on prohibition. That act went along with this amendment. This Act doesn’t have much of an effect on us today because it was also the only amendment repealed. We can drink now legally if you are age 21 and up. We can still drink for religious rites. Alcohol is manufactured in some states. We aren’t affected in a bad way anymore.
Amendment XIX- This is the amendment of the women. It allowed the women of the U.S. the right to vote, a right known as woman suffrage. Around this time women did not have the same rights as men. People didn’t want to see woman succeed. Women were able to vote and that was being one step closer to have full rights as men. This amendment was passed by Congress June 4, 1919 but was ratified on August 18, 1920. People especially women felt it was unfair that voters rights were based on sex. There were big conflicts about this. Woman are finally able to vote and with the rest of this woman have risen to be big in working industries. They are more successful now and they have so many opportunities that they didn’t have before.
