Amendment 20(XX): This amendment is officially named the Lame-Duck Period shortened for Federal Officials or the Twentieth Amendment. The Twentieth Amendment sets dates at which United States government elected offices end and it establishes what happens if the president dies. This amendment changed the Constitution by it establishing the dates of when the president, vice president, and congress have reached the end of their terms and the beginning terms of the new president, vice president, and congress. Also, it allowed a system of what would happen if the president dies or resigns. The Twentieth Amendment was ratified on January 23, 1933. This was also passed by Congress on March 2, 1932. This amendment was written to establish the system of office by who will do what and how long will they have to do those tasks as president, vice president, and congress. This amendment affects our lives today by it being the reason we know when an old president will be moving out of office and when a new president will be moving into an office.
Amendment 21(XXI): This amendment is officially named Repeal to Prohibition or Twenty-First Amendment. The Twenty-First Amendment explains that the Eighteenth Amendment is repealed because the Eighteenth Amendment prohibits alcoholic beverages in the United States by declaring the production, transportation, and and selling of alcohol is illegal. The Twenty-First Amendment changed the Constitution by it establishing the end of prohibition in the United States. The Twenty-First Amendment was ratified on December 5, 1933. This amendment mandated prohibition on alcohol across the whole nation on January 16, 1919. Even after this amendment was written and ratified, some states continued prohibition by them maintaining statewide temperance laws. The Twenty-First Amendment affects our lives today by allowing Americans to consume alcohol when they reach 21 years old and alcohol becoming legal in all of the states of the United States.
Amendment 22(XXII): This amendment is officially named Limitation of Presidential term of office or Twenty-Second Amendment. The Twenty-Second Amendment established a system of how long the president gets to be in office, which is that this amendment allows the president to be in office for only two 4 year terms. This amendment changed the Constitution by establishing a system for the president that allows him to serve only 8 years, if he got reelected. The Twenty-Second Amendment was ratified on February 27, 1951. This amendment was passed by Congress on March 21, 1947. The Twenty-Second Amendment was written because after having a democratic president for 13 years, the Republican party gained a majority in the House of Representatives and in the U.S. Senate. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the only president to be elected to four terms and because of this the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate both ensured that the president can only serve no more than two terms by establishing the Twenty-Second Amendment. The Twenty-Second Amendment affects our lives today by establishing a system of how many years a president can serve in office.
Amendment 23(XXIII): This amendment is officially named Voters in Washington D.C. given the right to vote for presidential electors or Twenty-Third Amendment. The Twenty-Third Amendment extends the right to vote in the presidential election to citizens that are residing in the District of Columbia by granting the District electors in the Electoral College. The Twenty-Third Amendment changed the Constitution by establishing voting rights to citizens in small districts as if they were states. The Twenty-Third Amendment was ratified on March 29, 1961. This amendment was passed by Congress on June 16, 1960. This amendment changed history by Washington D.C. citizens being able to exercise their right to vote in a presidential election in 1964. The Twenty-Third Amendment affects our lives today by the population rising and rising in Washington D.C. over the years and by there being only 3 electoral votes that can be counted as a big amount for a presidential election.
Amendment XXIV- Amendment 24, abolished the poll taxes for all federal elections. A poll tax is a tax levied on every adult, without reference to income or resources. Also meaning people had to pay a fee to vote and this affected people a lot, especially African-Americans. Five states voted on outlawing poll taxes including Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas. January 23, 1964 the amendment was finally ratified. It was a very important this be ratified for the African Americans. The African-Americans in the South faced significant discrimination and could not vote for elected officials that would work to end discrimination. We don’t have to pay anymore and the African-Americans are doing better when it comes to discrimination. More people are coming up to vote knowing they don’t have to pay.
Amendment XXV- This amendment deals with succession to the presidency and establishes procedures both for filling a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, as well as responding to Presidential Disabilities. In other words if the President dies or is removed from office the Vice President becomes the President. We actually have put this amendment to use. When John F. Kennedy was assassinated the Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson moved up. It helped establish the conflicts of a President dying or leaving. Especially when JFK was killed. Congress approved the 25th amendment on July 6, 1965 and completely ratified it February 10, 1967. It would solve a future problem and instead of trying to figure out what to do when a President dies or leaves we already figured it out. It gives our minds more ease knowing if something happens to our President the Vice President moves up.
Amendment XXVI- A simple amendment, it establishes the right to vote at age 18. Anyone 18 or older can vote anyone younger can not. Many people agree 18 is the age of adulthood. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation. It took many years for African Americans the right to vote then many years for Women to vote and a few for people ages 18-21 to vote. It was passed by congress March 23, 1971 and ratified July 1, 1971. This amendment also changed a portion of the 14th amendment. The 14th amendment addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws. President Franklin D. Roosevelt felt if you are old enough to fight in a war at age 18 you are old enough to vote. Many 18 years olds today vote. It just gives a younger population the chance to vote and help determine our next President.
Amendment XXVII- This amendment prohibits any law that increases or decreases the salary of members of Congress from taking effect until the start of the next set of terms of office for Representatives. Meaning this amendment prevents members of Congress from granting themselves a pay raise or other change in compensation without the consent of American public. This was a big change to the Constitution, it deals with pay raises or decreases members of Congress. Congressional pay must take effect after the next term of office for the representatives. This amendment was originally proposed September 25, 1789. It was ratified May 7, 1992. Payrolls needed to be made known to members of the Congress and what they could do with them and what they couldn’t. This amendment took 200 years since it was proposed to actually be ratified by the states. This was one of those problems that needed to be established. People had questions and they didn’t get answered until late and they finally did years and years later.
